ZERO ENERGY HOME - SILKSTONE, BARNSLEY
Working at the request project architect Jefferson Sheard Architects we are providing the calculation analysis to inform the design basis for this near zero-energy new family home in the Silkstone area of Barnsley.
We joined the JSA team for this project in March 2021 to help prepare the mechanical services specification for the home which lies in a location that is remote from the highway and accessed only via a narrow bridleway.
The new home is recessed into a hillside making part of the accommodation subterranean. This helps with insulation but has the downside of managing daylighting.
The home is open plan with a large south facing daylit double height central living space shield from the sun by a large roof overhang. The clients are husband and wife who run a successful pottery business in the area. Part of the brief entails the successful use of Black Clay as a natural material render.
Advanced thermal modelling software is used to predict performance and allow us as designers to size the heat pump to serve underfloor heating and a large hot water store. Particular attention was paid to the acoustics of the heat pump selection to make sure that it causes no disturbance to this otherwise sleepy village in remote South Yorkshire.
